Here is the first of the weekly drawings. This one differs from my usual approach in that I painted it entirely in Photoshop, without doing line art first and then filling it in. I was trying to follow the example of Xia from I Draw Girls. Like I said yesterday, that doesn’t work so well for me because I don’t know when the hell to leave well enough alone. Something I’m considering doing is sticking to flatter shading for a while, to force myself not to go too overboard with the shading, since that’s exactly what I did with Falcon Twin, and it’s what I’m still doing now. It would be OK if I were really good at it, but my results always look flat and lifeless. What you see looks a little better now that I have three or four adjustment layers on it to unify the whole thing, but if I really knew what I were doing, I wouldn’t need those at all. I’m making an effort recently to work at higher resolution. The original image here is 3200×2000, and even that’s a bit conservative. Having really high-res source material makes it easier to pull it down and use it for wallpapers and the like. If the original stuff is 1280×1024 or something, using it for a widescreen 1680×1050 wallpaper probably isn’t going to work very well. If you want to see some good art, check out this blog post from the Blackstar development blog. Apparently this is an MMO in development that I wasn’t really aware of before. I’ll have to keep an eye on it. Check out their other posts too; what they’re showing looks pretty hot. Remember how I mentioned yesterday that the fire alarm went off in my building the previous night? Well some frigging moron set it off again last night. Hence the title of this post. At this point, if I don’t see smoke billowing through the hallway, I’m not in any hurry to get my stuff packed. I might pull the relevant bags out just in case, but I’m not packing everything up just to have to unpack it ten minutes later. And the alarm is still fucking loud. Studied some French anyway. Did the Instant French thing, and a couple more lessons on the Beeb. Started uttering my first full, tortured sentences in French on the IF exercises. Got a long way to go, but I don’t think that’s too bad for a week and a half of self-study. I received my quarterly review at work yesterday. Went pretty well, so I’m happy about that. Comments
Nice pic. Dastardly Dagger in Darkdor! About that setting the alarm off… usually it is a felony. I can’t remember, are you in a rental or owned block? Anyway there should be a way to make a formal complaint and put some legal pressure onto the owners to try to catch the Idiot. Perhaps it’s the fire alarm that’s too sensitive, and is being set off by someone smoking in the wrong place? And nice pic indeed. Though that’s one tight armband she’s got there. Looks nice. The hairline is a bit wonky, but it looks alot different than your previous stuff, especially the face. The structure seems much more… natural. Akely: It’s an owned block with tons of units. If it does become an ongoing thing, I definitely will be complaining, and I’m guessing I won’t be alone. Gillsing: It’s a possibility. But how many times does a person have to smoke underneath the fire alarm and wind up deafening himself and summoning the fire department before he figures out what he’s doing wrong? At least two, I guess… Dan: Thanks. I’m surprised you think the face looks different from other stuff I’ve done. To me it looks almost exactly the same, with all the same construction issues I’ve had for years. I was thinking that if the fire alarm sensors are placed outside of the apartments, it might not be the same person setting off the alarm. But hey, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s being set of intentionally. Sounds like something people could do for fun, you know. When I was a kid, we had daylight sensors where you could climb up and shine a flashlight in order to shut off all the streetlights in the neighbourhood. For fire alarms we’ve all got our own installed in every apartment, so the only one you’re going to set off would be your own. That takes care of that! As for the face, I thought that it looked a bit different as well, though that could be due to the hair covering some of it. And it looks slightly flatter than your faces usually do. But that could be due to the facing and the darkness. For construction issues, have you considered using some kind of 3D program to pose a model for you? Or train yourself like a martial artist by drawing the same detail over and over until it becomes a reflex? Not that I think that you need to change your style, but if you’re unhappy with it… |
